From Mercado 4 to a business group

Why was Grupo Vázquez able to grow?

It did not simply grow one company into a giant. It kept changing its approach to growth: customers, capital, technology, M&A and a business ecosystem.

How do you go from a business in Mercado 4 to banking, technology, travel and ticketing?

It is hard to understand by looking only at the number of companies. The key is to see which new capability it gained at each stage.
01 · ORIGINS

Growth began close to the customer

Grupo Vázquez's official history identifies its early milestones as an automotive workshop in 1945, Comercial Santa Catalina in Mercado 4 from 1956, and Credicentro from 1984. In 2000, it opened its first branch in Ciudad del Este.

Lending reveals not only what a customer needs, but also how much they can afford to pay. Looking back, PARAGUAY INSIGHT sees customer contact as an important foundation for the later expansion into finance, payments and technology.

Being close to customers is also a business capability

In a trading area such as Mercado 4, buyers, sellers and people who need financing are close together. That direct view of demand matters.

02 · THE ENGINE OF GROWTH

It did more than add companies: it changed how it grew

In 2012, Credicentro made its first share issue on the Asunción Stock Exchange. From 2014, the corporate history highlights greater investment in technology and stronger management. It then made increasing use of investments and acquisitions as tools for growth.

PARAGUAY INSIGHT organizes that evolution into six stages: trade, credit, capital markets, technology, M&A and a business ecosystem. Integration may be the next stage.

Trade|know the customer
Credit|finance demand
Capital|use outside resources
Technology|digitize customer contact
M&A|buy time and capabilities
Ecosystem|connect
Next stage|integrate
